Winter is a perfect time to enjoy your home theater. Who cares that it’s cold outside or that it gets dark by 5:00 when you can hang out with your friends and family to enjoy your favorite movies in a cinema-like setting? But if you’re not using your home theater to host some fantastic parties, you’re missing out on an enormous opportunity to be the favorite party host. Here are a few tips for hosting a New Year’s Eve party in your home theater.
- Plan multiple stages for your party. Consider your guest list. If you want to include families with small children, they may prefer a movie everyone can watch early in the evening. Hand out movie tickets and coupons for popcorn and soda to the youngsters as they arrive, and plan to show an age-appropriate movie around the 7:00 timeframe. The kids will love getting to “go to the movies” while the parents can enjoy socializing, listening to music, and playing games in another room.
- Choose a movie most people have seen. If you’re playing a movie during later hours, choose a popular picture many people have seen. For example, many popular comedies make an excellent backdrop that people can watch for a few minutes and then jump into a game of cards or join the dance party in another room. Movies like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Back to the Future, The Wedding Singer, Austin Powers, or Pitch Perfect are all fun movies that won’t absorb all your guests’ attention.
- Don’t forget the music selection. Play music in other rooms of your home that will keep guests chatting, dancing, and having fun. It’s easy to search for party playlists on the internet and download your favorite selections to your music library. Stream your music to your distributed music sound system and adjust the volume for each room so guests can have conversations in some areas while they can dance their hearts out in others.
- Plan a variety of foods. Think about food in three categories: grab-and-go snacks like chips and popcorn, appetizers like bacon-wrapped figs or finger sandwiches, and main courses like pizza, pasta, or chicken wings. Unless your party begins after 9, you’ll likely want to have a selection of each, but spread them out throughout the evening. Make a menu board so guests know what to expect and when you’ll be serving each item.
- Be careful with the alcohol. It’s tempting to offer various beers, wines, ciders, or cocktails. However, you could be putting your guests in danger after they leave your party, and it makes your party much more expensive to host. Choose a few lower-alcohol beverages and supplement with an extensive selection of soft drinks or a hot cocoa bar instead.
